FIELD NOTES / BRITISH SHOOTING GUIDE

English Sporting

Crossers, driven clays, rabbits and teal: a course built around varied presentations.

A different question at each stand.

Targets may come as singles or pairs. Their distance, direction and visible face can all change across a round.

Watch the presentation before your turn. There is no single mandatory choke for English Sporting.

Quarter, half, or something else?

Quarter is useful for many ordinary presentations; half is another familiar choice. Quarter in both barrels can work well, but the pattern from your actual cartridge matters more than the label.

A tighter choke does not fix an incorrectly placed pattern. Try the choke animation to see the trade-off.

A straightforward cartridge starting point

For ordinary lead-permitted club Sporting, 28g No. 7½ is a common all-round choice. A suitable 24g load can be comfortable and effective too.

Check the ground’s shot-material, load and wad requirements. See the cartridge guide.
