FIELD NOTES / BRITISH SHOOTING GUIDE
DTL & trap
One outgoing clay at a time. Understand Down-the-Line and how other trap disciplines differ.
How a DTL round works.
- Shooters occupy five pegs behind a central trap.
- Each takes a turn at one outgoing clay.
- After five targets each, move one peg right as directed; peg 5 returns round the back to peg 1.
- Continue until each shooter has faced 25 targets.
The shooter who started the round continues to start each set. Follow the referee’s instructions when moving.

25 targets · maximum 75 pointsChokes and cartridges
Targets move away, so a second shot is taken at a more distant clay. Tighter chokes are conventional; Headley gives three-quarter or full as examples.
For lead-permitted DTL, 28g No. 7½ is a familiar cartridge choice. Confirm the pattern and the competition’s current rules. It is not necessary to change a proven set-up simply to match a generic chart.
